Cop Out – Film Reel Reviews

Reminds me of the old school buddy cop comedies. Just wish that Kevin Smith had written it as well. – Will

I got all excited when I heard Kevin Smith’s name attached to this. A buddy cop comedy from Kevin Smith! How could that go wrong? Then I realized it wasn’t written by Kevin Smith and all that excitement faded away. With Bruce Willis in the flick, and with Kevin Smith at least directing the film I figured I could at least check it out when I had nothing better to do. Along comes a Tuesday and I have nothing to do so it was off to see Cop Out. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be and offered up some pretty good laughs even though I can’t stand Tracy Morgan and Seann William Scott.

If Bruce Willis hadn't been in this film I never would have watched it.

Thankfully Seann William Scott plays a very small part in the movie. Too bad that Tracy Morgan has to be one of the main characters so I had to listen to him screaming his way through all his dialogue and drooling all over himself numerous times. Seriously, what the hell was with all the drooling? The guy needed a bucket or something and it was really gross.

The movie has an old school buddy cop flick feel to it and it reminded me of being younger and watching Beverly Hills Cop, or actually Turner and Hooch. Willis could be Turner and of course Morgan would be Hooch! It starts out very light, Willis and Morgan wind up getting in trouble and getting suspended for 30 days and then take it upon themselves to continue their police work when Willis gets a valuable baseball card stolen from him. This gets them smack in the middle of an ongoing investigation that they eventually find themselves a part of. It’s pretty formulaic really with the beginning of the movie having all the laughs before the ending takes a more serious tone when they have to confront the bad guys. It all wraps up nicely at the end with more of the same laughs it started with. No surprises here.

Some of the criminals in the flick are hardcore. Just look at this car thief! Scary!

The biggest problem with the movie for me is that it’s a comedy. I don’t really like comedies. I don’t usually find them very funny and even when I do I never seem to like them as much as other people. Maybe something is wrong with my sense of humour? Cop Out has enough laughs to make it worthwhile but I really wish that Kevin Smith had written it. Early on it does have that Smith tone to it but it quickly turns to a regular old cop comedy. Nothing to write home about really but I would have enjoyed it more without Tracy Morgan. I just don’t like the guy and I’m sure he spends three-quarters of the movie yelling.

I can’t say that I’d recommend spending your hard-earned cash on this in the theater. A few bucks for a rental would be good but I wouldn’t go beyond that. I’ll just have to wait patiently for the next Kevin Smith written flick. Wasn’t he supposed to be doing something with The Green Hornet?

I actually enjoy a good comedy, but I never go to see them at the theatre. The big screen experience doesn’t really add anything. I can laugh just as hard (and harder if I damn well want to!!) when I’m at home. I have to say though, I watched a trailer for this film a couple days ago and it didn’t even make me chuckle. I really liked Clerks and Dogma but Smith has had some stinkers. I might give it a try when it comes out on DVD.

That’s the problem, Kevin Smith didn’t write the movie. Had he written it then I’m sure I would have laughed my ass off. Of course he has made some bad flicks before that would make me cry, I just think this would have ended up being Clerks in cops uniforms.

    This movie is awful.

  4. hagiblog says:

HAHAHA! Straight and to the point Branden, I love it! I really like Bruce Willis and he was the main reason I went for this flick. He’s funny in his smartass sort of way but this movie has a lot working against it, mainly Tracy Morgan’s screaming act through the whole thing.

  5. Branden says:

Bruce Willis was my anchor for watching this movie. You know that Willis fucking hated Tracy Morgan as his partner and an actor.

  6. hagiblog says:

I would too! Willis is probably deaf in one ear now having to work next to Morgan.

  7. Heather says:

What the fuck was Tracy Morgan doing? He was terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible.

Willis really wasn’t bad, but you hit this review right on the head Will, and I laughed my butt off at you comparing Morgan to Hooch.

I thought the kid thief part was actually funny, especially when he kicked him back i nthe nuts.

  8. hagiblog says:

The kid stealing the car was hilarious. Probably the best part of the movie since Tracy Morgan has to be quiet after getting hit in the nuts. Plus I would have liked to have hit him in the nuts so I got to live out a fantasy!

Was this flick just a bad decision for Willis and Smith or what?

  9. Heather says:

Can you imagine how awful it would have been without them? NOOOOOOOO!

  10. hagiblog says:

But if they weren’t involved I wouldn’t have to watch Tracy Morgan! HAHA!
