Here’s a remake that nobody seemed to make much of a stink over. The Crazies was a great film but it was easy to see how it could be updated well. Romero’s original, with its small budget, is an effective flick that showcases some of the typical themes that I’ve seen in a Romero flick before. The remake didn’t really have that same message and is focused purely on the small group of survivors as they try to keep themselves from getting sick and just get out of town.

The military isn’t nearly as bumbling in this one and they’re also not as power crazed either. They’re still pretty heartless but after the crazy townsfolk manage a breakout, the military is almost non-existant in the movie. The basically pack up camp and take off, sticking to random raids here and there before retreating back to the borders of their quarantine zone. There’s also a few major plot points that are gone from the original which I missed. In the original there was a scientist working on a cure. To further point out that the military is just as bad as the infected people, he is mistakenly gunned down at the end of the film while he’s carrying the cure in his hand. So the people who were sent there to stop the spread of, and come up with a cure for the disease, are the same ones who leave the town with no hope.

Early on it's hard to tell who is really infected, but that doesn't last long.

The endings to both films are similar while at the same time completely different. The overall end result is the same but who lives and who dies is a mystery now. I wasn’t impressed with the final moments though and I prefer the original ending to this. What we get here is pretty over the top in my opinion. Its got lots of scares though which had my girlfriend jumping. There may just be too many of them though. I guess they’re effective and may work on the young ones but I’ve been around enough to know that when you look through a keyhole that someones face is gonna be on the other side suddenly.

Of course the movie also has some humour to it and most of it is between Olyphant and Joe Anderson as the sheriff and deputy. Their characters have a few back and forths that got me chuckling and their overall plot follows the original pretty closely. The biggest change here is that Romero seemed to have a message to his movie and the remake just wants to be a movie. And it’s a movie that I enjoyed.

The crazies ended up being a little too zombie for me when they're not supposed to be that way. Still look freaking creepy though!

It’s a great movie and is full of tension and some good scares. It almost lost me with its ending but the final shot of the film redeems itself a little bit, leaving us with the possibility of happiness or more madness. I prefer my endings to be without much hope, I can think of some exceptions but I won’t go into it here. It’s that final shot of the movie that really ties the original to this remake. The movie also wasn’t quite as gory as I thought it would be. There’s a huge body count but it’s shown more in a pile of corpses than it is in graphic murders. A lot of the deaths are offscreen and suggested which works well but there are a few onscreen that aren’t gory but shocked me anyway.

Seriously now, this is how everyone’s weekend should be going. First, go hit Shutter Island. Freshen up and head out for The Crazies. Both great movies and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend 2 days. But since I’ve already seen Shutter Island I’m just going to have to be happy with [REC] 2!

Rule of thumb has become: If Timothy Olyphant is in it, it’s worth seeing.

DVD release for me, but a very anticipated one.

  2. hagiblog says:

HAHA! I agree with you there Heather. Timothy Olyphant is delivering some great performances although the movies that surround him may be a little less than great.

I had to see this one in the theater. It was the Crazies! Of course I was once again late to the movie. I have a habit of missing the first 10 minutes of half the flicks I see in the theater. Thankfully I didn’t miss much though.

  3. Heather says:

Well this is your bread and butter! I’d expect you to catch this in the theater.

Olyphant has some new show on FX coming out soon??????? He wears a cowboy hat and so far that’s all I’ve got, but I’m going to pay more attention to when it starts because I want to catch his stuff, even as you pointed out, it’s not always great, he usually is. :)

  4. hagiblog says:

It’s on FX and he’s in a cowboy hat??? I’m not sure that’s enough information and I don’t get FX so I’m relying on you to fill me in on all the details Heather! HAHA!

I do love the wacky horror flicks so of course I had to see this in the theater, on the first day no less. Plus I was getting my fill of horror because I promised to take the kids to Alice in Wonderland and How To Train Your Dragon.

Looking forward to Wonderland but I’m not sure about this Dragon one. I hope it’s got some adult charm to it.

  5. Heather says:

Yeah, I still haven’t found out any of the details. I think it starts soon. When I find out everything I’ll keep you posted. Usually FX puts their box sets out pretty fast though and often have their shows episodes able to purchase on I-Tunes.

Love the banner of course! And the hubby and I are taking Brosnan to it on Saturday or Sunday morning! I can’t wait! My most anticipated movie for the year.

The dragon one the hubby and Broz want to see. I may sit it out with Liam, but it does look like it could be fun.

  6. hagiblog says:

Yup, I’m heading to see Alice in Wonderland this Sunday because the kids are off to their mothers the other days. I would like to see this opening night but I guess I can hold off for a little bit. At least it will make Sunday less boring.

  7. Heather says:

The show with Timothy Olyphant is called Justified!
    :)

  8. hagiblog says:

Justified, alright, I’ll be checking into it now!

  9. Branden says:

I saw this movie last night. I enjoyed it. I did not see the original movie. It was enjoyable, but I thought it was a little hokey with that car wash sequence, the last minute killshot in the Dutton’s house and also the scene with David punching out Russ with his right hand that was stabbed through hours eariler.

  10. hagiblog says:

You gotta see the original man! It may be old but it’s still good, much like me!

I loved the car wash scene, especially the way that it ended. A great little punchline. I never pay attention to stuff like punching someone with a stabbed hand, it seems to be the norm for horror flicks or action flicks for that matter. Our heroes can take an unbelievable amount of pain without it affecting their performance until they finally win and you see them limping around clutching their ribs.

  11. Branden says:

    I should see the original.

Did you think that the govt was going to bomb Cedar Rapids at the end of the movie?

  12. hagiblog says:

Aw man, you guys gotta spoiler your comments! HAHA!

It was a fall back plan of the original and I didn’t assume that they were going to do it but it wasn’t a shock. Although it did make me want to scream out “Get in the fridge, get in the fridge!” in the theater though!

  13. Branden says:

    Oh, shit. Yeah. Oops!

    ***SPOILERS***

I know that the govt wanted to wipe out Cedar Rapids, instead of Ogden yada-yada that was caught in the crossfire.

I thought that David and Judy were fucked going to Cedar Rapids.

  14. hagiblog says:

    SPOILERS!!

Wait, wait, wait, the government did bomb Ogden Marsh right? That was their plan if the outbreak couldn’t be contained and and then the end scene is a map of Cedar Rapids set up just like Ogden Marsh. So they think they’re headed to safety but they’re really just heading for the same crap all over again.

That is how it went right? HAHA! Too many movies means I can’t remember what happened specifically in a certain film except for the very last one I watched.

  15. Branden says:

    SPOILERS

I mean, when that plane crashed in that marsh releasing the toxin to the water supply that made everyone crazy, that government guy in that black SUV said it was meant for “population control” in another city. I thought it was Cedar Rapids.

The govt did bomb Ogden Marsh when it was no hope of recovery there.

  16. hagiblog says:

I probably missed that part since I was about 10 or 15 minutes late for the movie. I came in after the guy at the baseball diamond got shot. I have a habit of missing the beginning of the movie in the theater. I really need to leave earlier to get there! HAHA!

I’ll have to check out the full flick eventually. I’m not really sure how that fits in the movie. Maybe it was meant for another city or something. I would assume that it would have been for war though.

  17. Branden says:

    SPOILERS- MAYBE

Actually, that happened when Bill burned his family.

It absolutely gets the job done. It doesn’t light the world on fire – actually it does, but only literally, not metaphorically – but it’s not trying to and it doesn’t want to. Good Review!
